Ekiti State Governor, Biodun Oyebanji, emphasized the importance of regulating land acquisition as he signed the newly passed Ekiti State Property Protection, Anti-Land Grabbing, Second Amendment, Law, 2024.
The law, enacted by the state House of Assembly, aims to streamline and sanitize land dealings within the state, addressing longstanding concerns about illegal land acquisition and violent disputes over property ownership.
Oyebanji made this announcement during an event in Ado Ekiti on Thursday, where he signed three new laws that he believes will contribute significantly to the development of the state.
The governor’s administration, which marked its two-year anniversary on Wednesday, was celebrated with a ‘State of the State’ address before the House of Assembly.
The Governor also used the occasion to express his appreciation for the support of the Ekiti State House of Assembly, led by Speaker Adeoye Aribasoye.
He acknowledged the critical role the Assembly played in providing the legal frameworks that have allowed his administration to make significant progress, stating, “Without your support, there is no way we would have been able to do anything because you provided a legal framework that enables us to implement most of those decisions that have translated into the outcomes we are all proud of today.”
In his speech, Oyebanji also reassured Ekiti residents that the next two years would bring even greater achievements than his first two years in office, stating, “The next two years are going to be characterised by many achievements that will surpass the first two years, as it is said that the reward for hard work is more work.”
However, he cautioned that while his administration enjoys widespread goodwill, it must remain vigilant to avoid complacency, adding, “The danger is that we must not rest on our oars because we must avoid a reversal of the gains we have had in the last two years.”
Addressing the significance of the newly signed Property Protection Law, Oyebanji emphasized its potential to transform land management in the state.
“This law, when fully operational, will prohibit forceful entry, illegal occupation of landed properties, fraudulent and violent conducts pertaining to landed properties in the state,” he said.
He further expressed excitement about the law’s implementation, which he believes will curb the stunted growth caused by illegal land activities. “I can assure you that we will implement that law to the letter, no matter who is involved,” he pledged.
In addition to the anti-land grabbing law, Oyebanji signed into law the High Court Law (First Amendment, 2014) and the Ekiti State Legislative House (Powers and Privileges) Law, 2024.
These laws are expected to enhance the legal and legislative frameworks governing the state, further contributing to its development.
Speaking at the event, Speaker Adeoye Aribasoye highlighted the significance of the new laws in advancing democracy and improving the lives of Ekiti residents.
He praised the collaborative efforts between the executive and legislative branches, saying, “The event signposts the journey to further advance the dividends of democracy to the people.”
The signing ceremony was attended by key figures in the state’s leadership, including the Deputy Governor, Mrs. Monisade Afuye; Deputy Speaker, Bolaji Olagbaju; Secretary to the State Government, Dr. Habibat Adubiaro; Head of Service, Dr. Folakemi Olomojobi; members of the state House of Assembly, and members of the state executive council.
