The Delta Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps, Mr Bassey Eshiet, has revealed that there are 6,146 unclaimed permanent driver’s licences in its custody.
According to The News Agency of Nigeria, Eshiet stated this while addressing journalist in Asaba, on Monday.
He expressed worries over the attitude of some motorists who processed driver’s licences and never bothered to collect them.
He then urged those whose processed licences had not been collected to ensure they collect it before the end of April or face sanction when caught.
“Operation show your legal evidence to drive on Nigerian highways will commence from May 1. The command is poised to get rid of unlicensed drivers from the highways in Delta State.
“Possession of a valid licence remains a major requirement for driving and the absence of it constitutes a traffic infraction and endangers the lives of road users.
“Defaulters risk N10,000 fine or six months’ imprisonment or both,” the sector commander said.
The Sector Commander stated that the processing of the driver’s licence took time to ensure efficiency and quality.
“To obtain a driver’s licence entails an applicant going through driving school and the proficiency test by Vehicle Inspection Officers.
“With that, defensive drivers can be produced to drive on our highways and safety can be ensured,” he said.
