Victor Osimhen made an impressive debut in the Intercontinental derby, helping Galatasaray secure a 3-1 triumph over Fenerbahce at the Ulker Stadyumu Fenerbahce Sukru Saracoglu Spor Kompleksi on Saturday.
The Nigerian international, who joined Galatasaray on loan from Napoli earlier this month, was named in the starting lineup by manager Okan Buruk, even with star forward Mauro Icardi returning from injury.
This decision highlighted Buruk’s faith in Osimhen’s abilities, especially in such a high-stakes match.
Fenerbahce, managed by the seasoned Jose Mourinho, entered the game with strong momentum, having kept clean sheets in their last three outings.
However, Galatasaray quickly asserted their dominance, taking the lead in the 20th minute after an unfortunate mistake by goalkeeper Dominik Livaković.
Just eight minutes later, Galatasaray doubled their advantage, with Osimhen showcasing his skill.
Rather than heading the ball from a promising cross, the Super Eagles striker cleverly chested it to former Napoli teammate Dries Mertens, who finished with finesse, placing the ball beyond Livaković.
As the game approached the hour mark, Galatasaray extended their lead further. Lucas Torreira, the former Arsenal midfielder, delivered a precise assist to Gabriel Sara, who calmly sidefooted in the visitors’ third goal.
Fenerbahce’s veteran forward Edin Dzeko managed to pull one back from the penalty spot, but it was not enough to shift the momentum of the match.
Despite missing several half-chances to score himself, Osimhen’s contributions have been notable in his early days in Turkey, having recorded two assists in his first two matches.
With this victory, Galatasaray not only celebrated a memorable derby win but also moved five points ahead of Fenerbahce in the Super Lig standings, boasting a flawless record with six wins from six games.
The atmosphere was electric, with passionate fans filling the stadium, and Osimhen’s performance has surely set the tone for an exciting season ahead as he continues to adapt to his new surroundings in Turkish football.
