Nigerian singer, Tems, has spoken out about the controversy surrounding her outfit at the 2023 Oscars.
The musician was dressed in a custom white sculptural gown by Ukrainian brand, Lever Couture’s AW22, Leleka Couture collection, which drew criticism for obstructing the view of other guests.
Speaking with Harper’s Bazzar, Tems revealed the motivation behind her extravagant dress.
She explained that, as it was her first Oscars attendance, she decided to “go all out” and “make the most” of the occasion.
Tems said that the dress was a celebration of her work and the people who support her. “This dress says ‘Yes, yes, I am here!'”, she added.
Tems also spoke about her recent achievements on the international music scene, including collaborations with Beyonce and Rihanna.
The singer said that these partnerships were an indication that she was on the “right path” and that her work was making an impact.
In her words; “If the biggest women in the world love my work to such an extent that they are working with me, then that must say something. My work is reaching places, it’s making some type of impact.
“And that is insane! I am just trying to keep my feet on the ground and continue running and doing things that are a hundred percent authentic to me. Evolving, learning, growing. It’s just the beginning for me.”
The ‘Crazy Things crooner, was nominated for Best Original Song at the Oscars for her collaboration with singer Rihanna, music producer Ludwig Göransson, and Black Panther’s director, Ryan Coogler, on the movie’s soundtrack, ‘Lift Me’.
Although the award went to Kaala Bhairava and Rahul Sipligunj for ‘Naatu Naatu’, Tems said that this was just the beginning for her.
The 2023 Oscars were held at the Dolby Centre in Los Angeles and attended by Hollywood’s finest, who showcased a range of fashion styles.
