A tragic accident on the Lagos-Ibadan expressway near Saapade on Saturday afternoon claimed the life of one woman and left 10 others with serious injuries.
According to The PUNCH, the crash, which occurred at approximately 2:58 p.m., involved a white Mazda bus with registration number GGE 858 XY, which somersaulted after one of its tyres burst.
The Ogun State Sector Command of the Federal Road Safety Corps confirmed the incident in a statement issued by its spokesperson, Florence Okpe.
She revealed that the accident was caused by the bus’s excessive speed, which led the driver to lose control after the tyre burst.
“A total of 17 people were involved in the crash, including eight male adults, seven female adults, one female child, and one male child. Unfortunately, one female adult lost her life, while ten others were seriously injured,” Okpe said.
The injured victims comprising two male adults, six female adults, a male child, and a female child were rushed to Patmag Hospital in Ogere for medical treatment. The body of the deceased was transported to FOS Morgue in Ipara Remo.
Okpe further emphasized that the primary causes of the crash were speed, tyre failure, and subsequent loss of control.
Meanwhile, Akinwumi Fasakin, the Ogun State Sector Commander of the FRSC, urged motorists to exercise caution when it comes to their vehicle tyres.
“Drivers must check the expiration dates and tread conditions of their tyres, and avoid using substandard tyres,” he advised. “A tyre burst at a controlled speed could have been better managed.”
