The Motorcycle Operators Union of Nigeria, Lagos State branch, has expressed its strong condemnation of the actions taken by an enraged mob that resulted in the tragic death of a senior police officer in Lagos.
This unfortunate incident transpired on October 19, 2024, at WEMPCO Junction, located along Mobil Road in Agege.
Reports revealed that the chaos unfolded after a commercial motorcyclist collided with the rear of a truck carrying goods, leading to the motorcyclist’s death.
Following the accident, a crowd of motorcyclists gathered at the scene, allegedly intent on attacking the truck driver and igniting the vehicle in retaliation.
In response to the escalating situation, law enforcement dispatched a team to the site in an effort to restore order and mitigate any further violence.
However, the police officers were met with hostility, and during the confrontation, an Assistant Superintendent of Police, who was leading the team, was brutally assaulted and lost his life.
The police have launched an investigation into the incident, actively working to identify and apprehend those responsible for the attack on the officers.
In light of this incident, the Publicity Secretary of MOUN, Raji Rasak, issued a statement expressing deep regret over the events that transpired.
He unequivocally condemned the mob’s actions, stating, “MOUN is totally opposed to resorting to self-help, mob action, and jungle justice in seeking to redress real or perceived wrongs in road traffic accidents. The union calls for calm and emphasizes the importance of cooperation with law enforcement to ensure proper investigation and justice.”
Rasak further highlighted the ongoing initiatives in collaboration with the Lagos State Government aimed at fostering self-regulation among commercial motorcyclists.
He noted that these efforts include unionization to register members and enhance regulatory measures, with the ultimate goal of preventing future incidents of mob violence.
The union extended heartfelt condolences to the family of the deceased police officer and the entire Nigeria Police Force.
MOUN also announced plans to pay a condolence visit to the Lagos State Police Commissioner to express their sympathy and support in light of this tragic event.
