Ogun State Governor, Dapo Abiodun, has announced the awarding of the contract for the reconstruction of the 63km Odo/Abeokuta road.
This announcement was made during the commissioning of the Ilaro-Iwoye-Owode road in Yewa South Local Government Area on Thursday.
The Governor highlighted that the reconstruction is part of his administration’s initiatives to tackle the state’s infrastructure challenges.
Abiodun emphasized the importance of the Odo/Abeokuta road, noting that it is the second busiest in Nigeria, stating that the completion of this road would significantly enhance the transportation of goods and services from this axis through the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway to other regions of the country.
The Governor also mentioned that construction is already underway on the Sagamu-Papalanto road, with progress also being made on the Papalanto-Ilaro route.
“We have just awarded the Ado-Odo/Abeokuta road. It will be the most expensive road this administration has reconstructed. It is 63 kilometres.
“That road is the second most busiest road in the country and extremely important to the economy of Yewaland, Ogun Central, and the entire Ogun State.
“From our industrial capital of Ado-Odo/Ota, it allows you to evacuate goods and services through that road to the hinterland. Those in Ado-Odo/Ota will go on that road through Papalanto, link the interchange, and you are there on Lagos-Ibadan expressway,” he said.
Abiodun highlighted his administration’s achievements in infrastructure development, particularly in Ilaro, where affordable housing projects have been completed, and between eight to nine roads have been constructed in the Ogun West Senatorial District. This initiative aligns with his promise to ensure balanced development across the state.
During the commissioning of the Ilaro-Iwoye-Owode road in Yewa South Local Government Area, the Governor noted that the road, neglected since 1991, is part of the celebration marking the fifth anniversary of his administration.
He emphasized the strategic importance of infrastructure in boosting the economy and attracting investors.
Abiodun also shared his vision of transforming the area into the country’s food basket and cotton hub through a targeted agricultural program, assuring the residents that any abandoned projects impacting their lives would be completed.
Senator Solomon Olamilekan Adeola, representing Ogun West Senatorial District, praised the governor for rehabilitating the road, which had previously been a hotspot for accidents, kidnappings, and robberies.
He noted that the road’s improvement would revive local businesses and address the region’s infrastructural deficits.
Former Governor Aremo Olusegun Osoba, in his goodwill message, reminisced about the area’s past role as a major food supplier to Ogun State and Lagos.
He commended Abiodun for focusing on people-oriented projects and urged him to continue with urban renewal programs to further open up the state for economic growth.
Commissioner for Works and Infrastructure, Engr. Ade Akinsanya, stated that the road would spur socio-economic development, attract investors, and generate employment opportunities for the youth.
Olu of Ilaro, Oba Kehinde Olugbenle, acknowledged the road’s abandonment by previous administrations and praised Governor Abiodun and the National Assembly members for their collaborative efforts in transforming the area’s economic landscape.
The event culminated with the road’s commissioning by Aremo Osoba, marking a significant milestone for the region’s development.
