The Ogun State government has suspended a teacher from Obada Grammar School in Idi-Emi following the death of a student, Monday Arijo, reportedly after the teacher administered corporal punishment.
The incident, which took place on Friday, prompted swift action from the Ministry of Education, Science, and Technology.
According to an official statement, the school principal, Mrs. Tamrat Onaolapo, has been instructed to explain her role in the incident, specifically why corporal punishment, which the ministry says violates state policy, was permitted.
The ministry gave her 24 hours to provide an explanation, with potential disciplinary actions under consideration.
In a letter to the Arijo family, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry expressed condolences, describing Arijo as “a remarkable student who will be deeply missed by his peers and the entire school community.”
The letter also extended sympathy to his family, wishing them “strength and peace in this time of grief.”
Meanwhile, the Ogun State Police Command confirmed the arrest of the teacher involved.
“The teacher has been arrested, and we are conducting a thorough investigation,” said Police Public Relations Officer Omolola Odutola. “The public will be informed of the findings, as multiple accounts of the incident are circulating.”
As the investigation progresses, the Ogun State government has assured the public of its commitment to seek justice for the family of Monday Arijo, promising transparency in the case.
