A 26-year-old security guard, Muhammed Abubakar, employed by an undisclosed businessman to protect a property in Ajaka, Sagamu, is reported to have killed an unidentified man accused of attempting to steal Abubakar’s phone.
According to The PUNCH, on Tuesday, a police source familiar with the incident and a local resident indicated that the victim succumbed to his injuries at a Sagamu hospital around 9 p.m. on Monday.
A resident recounted that the fatal injury occurred when Abubakar struck the victim on the head with a large plank.
A source, who requested anonymity due to the incident’s sensitive nature, described a frightening noise coming from Abubakar’s post, leading residents to alert the Sagamu Police Division, suspecting foul play.
The source elaborated, “We suspected something was wrong when we heard the noise. One resident was sent to the division to report the matter. The residents returned with a police officer. But when they got to the scene, they saw the deceased in the pool of his blood, gasping for breath.
“The security guard was standing right beside him. When he was asked what happened, he said he was using his phone when the deceased suddenly appeared and snatched his phone from him. He said he gave him a hot chase and was nabbed with the help of another security guard, who grabbed the deceased from behind,” the source added.
It was reported that as the security guard was dragging the suspect back to his post, a scuffle ensued, which reportedly enraged Abubakar, prompting him to pick up a large stick and strike the man on the head.
As a result, blood began gushing from the victim’s head, and his screams attracted passersby who called the police for assistance.
On Tuesday, the command’s spokesperson, Omolola Odutola, confirmed that Abubakar had fled, suspecting that the victim had died in the hospital where he was taken for treatment following the incident.
Odutola stated, “The victim was taken to a hospital called Live Well Hospital in Ajaka, Sagamu, for treatment but was unfortunately declared dead by a doctor on duty at about 9 p.m. on Monday. His corpse has been deposited at the Olabisi Onabanjo University Teaching Hospital in Sagamu for presentation and identification.
“Meanwhile, Abubakar has absconded. Our men are working round the clock to have him apprehended.”
PUNCH reported a similar incident in September 2023, where two security guards were apprehended for allegedly shooting a man in the eye during a disagreement in Sango-Ota, Ogun State.
In that case, the deceased had a confrontation with the guards over their absence from their post, forcing him to open the gate himself. This led to one of the security guards shooting the man in the eye, resulting in his immediate death.
