The Ogun State Government has extended heartfelt congratulations to Oluwatimilehin Doko, the top-ranked player of the Ogun State Scrabble Association, celebrating his extraordinary accomplishment as the newly crowned African Scrabble Champion.
Doko clinched the prestigious title after a grueling 32-round contest held in Kigali, Rwanda, showcasing the rigour, determination, and commitment needed to emerge victorious on the continental stage.
In a letter signed by the Commissioner for Sports Development, Wasiu Isiaka, on Monday, the government highlighted Doko’s skillful execution and strategic play throughout the competition, which led to his well-deserved title as the Continental Champion.
The victory marks a significant achievement for both Doko and Ogun State, as he emerged from fierce competition to secure this distinguished honor.
Isiaka pointed to Doko’s impressive win against fellow Ogun State player and Team Nigeria teammate, Abdulmumin Jimoh, in the penultimate match, which underscored the exceptional pool of talent that Ogun State continues to foster.
This victory speaks volumes about the quality and depth of scrabble players produced by the state, further raising Ogun’s profile on the African Scrabble landscape.
Accompanying Doko in Kigali were several accomplished Ogun State players who also represented Nigeria, including Dr. Adebola Samuel, a dedicated physician at the Federal Medical Centre in Abeokuta; Cyril Umebiye; Olumide Oyejide; and Adebisi Adekansi, an African Games gold medalist.
These individuals, alongside Doko, highlighted the remarkable skill and dedication within the Ogun State Scrabble Association and the Nigerian national team.
The congratulatory message read, “We are immensely proud of Timilehin and our talented representatives who are members of Team Ogun in the upcoming National Sports Festival, tagged the Gateway Games Ogun 2024. Your triumphs inspire many across our state and demonstrate the potential that resides within our youth.”
In his message, Isiaka also acknowledged the steadfast support from the Ogun State Scrabble Association’s leadership, the team’s coaches, and the Ogun State Sports Council, all of whom have played pivotal roles in nurturing athletes and supporting their journey to success.
He further expressed gratitude to the Ogun State Governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun, for his commitment to sports development, which has significantly bolstered opportunities for Ogun State athletes to excel on national and global platforms.
