In a bid to alleviate the plight of residents affected by the recent demolition exercise at Igbegba Housing Estate, the Ogun State Government has approved the allocation of 15 housing units from its affordable housing program in Itanrin, Ijebu-Ode.
The government’s urban regeneration program aimed to revamp the estate, which had lost value over time.
According to The PUNCH, the General Manager of Ogun State Housing Corporation, Wale Ojo, the demolition exercise was carried out after a four-month notice was given to the residents.
Ojo described the exercise as an urban regeneration programme to ensure that the buildings met the current reality, as the housing units had lost value.
“Residents were given four months’ notice before the demolition exercise and the mortgages have also been extended to the people at a discounted interest rate.
“Some of the residents have also keyed into the affordable housing programme of the state government.
“The government is aware of the present economy of the country and, as a result, has made it mandatory to find succour for the residents of the estate by giving them relief measures, including the opportunity to key into the affordable housing scheme, as well as the avenue to access loans,” the statement read.
One of the affected residents, Akeem Rasheed, acknowledged the government’s notice but urged them to fulfill their promise of relief measures.
He expressed gratitude for the government’s efforts and hoped that the promises would be kept.
