The Ogun State Government, through its Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Development, has successfully trained over 300 women in various vocational skills to promote financial independence among women and youths.
According to The PUNCH, the state government on Tuesday distributed essential tools to the trainees, including sewing machines, locally made ovens, pedicure boxes, stoning machines, and industrial burners.
These items support skills in fashion designing, catering, cosmetology, and beauty care.
The initiative, which has reached over 20,000 beneficiaries, aims to combat poverty and unemployment within the state.
Speaking at the graduation and distribution event held at the Women Development Centre in Oke-Ilewo, Abeokuta, Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Development, Hon. Adijat Adeleye, emphasized that the acquired skills are vital for personal growth and the development of Small and Medium Enterprises.
Adeleye remarked, “The trainees have been trained in competitive skills that thrive in the society and these include Fashion Designing, Catering, Hairdressing, Cosmetology and Beauty care and the importance of vocational training cannot be overemphasised, serving as an alternative means of livelihood for the majority of people.”
She highlighted the unwavering support of the Governor Dapo Abiodun-led administration, noting various empowerment programs such as ‘Oko’wo Dapo.’ Adeleye encouraged the graduates to continuously seek knowledge and stay updated on the latest trends to remain relevant.
“I want you to make adequate use of the knowledge and skill acquired. It is important to embrace entrepreneurship with confidence and creativity in developing solutions that can turn needs into opportunities,” she added.
Special Adviser to the Governor on Women Affairs, Mrs. Ayotunde Lawal, emphasized the government’s commitment to enhancing the livelihoods of youth and women through vocational training.
She urged the graduates to leverage these opportunities to improve career prospects, foster entrepreneurship, and reduce reliance on traditional employment.
The Permanent Secretary in the ministry, Mrs. Adejumoke Adewole, stated that the program was designed to provide practical, marketable skills essential for local economic growth.
She added that quality vocational training would enable youths to become self-reliant and positively contribute to society.
Speaking on behalf of the beneficiaries, Barakat Adeniyi, expressed gratitude to the state government for the training and tools provided, stating that they are now equipped to make meaningful contributions to the economy.
