The Federal Capital Territory Police Command has assured residents of Abuja of a peaceful and secure Independence Day celebration on October 1, 2024.
In a statement released by the Command’s Public Relations Officer, SP Josephine Adeh, the police announced the strategic deployment of personnel and equipment across the city ahead of Nigeria’s 64th Independence Day.
“The FCT Police Command has put in place adequate measures to ensure a hitch-free celebration,” SP Adeh stated, adding that the deployment includes operatives from the Explosive Ordinance Disposal unit, anti-riot personnel, and visibility policing teams.
She also noted that traffic diversions will be implemented in key areas like Central Area and Eagle Square, which are expected to attract large crowds during the event.
Adeh urged residents to remain vigilant and to report any suspicious activities to the police, emphasizing that emergency lines will be active throughout the festivities.
“We encourage the public to cooperate with law enforcement and maintain peace throughout the celebrations,” she added.
Meanwhile, there are plans by a group of Nigerians to hold a protest on the same day, under the banner of #FearlessInOctober1, to express dissatisfaction with the country’s economic situation, particularly the removal of fuel subsidies and the naira devaluation.
The organizers of the protest have formally notified the Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, requesting protection for the demonstrators.
“The right to protest is fundamental,” the group stated, insisting they will not be deterred by state security agents. Despite the expected protests, the police reiterated their commitment to ensuring the safety of all residents and maintaining public order.
