Two Canadian men, Devin Wolfgang Vandorhoef and Darius Avery Whyte, were arrested in California for a failed murder plot involving a female gamer.
Reports revealed that both suspects were arrested by authorities at the airport.
Vandorhoef, obsessed with the woman after years of online gaming, travelled with Whyte to her residence in Salinas.
They posed as delivery men with a package containing weapons and restraints.
Upon confronting her and her boyfriend, Vandorhoef stabbed the boyfriend critically and attacked the woman, who defended herself, injuring Vandorhoef. All victims and the attacker are expected to recover.
Authorities warn against sharing personal information with online acquaintances.
Speaking on the incident, Commander Andres Rosas of the Monterey County Sheriff’s Office stated, “There [are] two online gamers who travelled from Canada to California and attacked a fellow female gamer.”
He further noted, “There is [a] big thing in online gaming nowadays. You just have to be cautious.”
Chief Assistant District Attorney Berkeley Brannon explained, “The two men posed as delivery persons holding a package. Inside the package, there were handcuffs, tape, cutlery, and a knife. The two men will face murder charges.”
Commander Andres Rosas also issued a cautionary warning, saying, “Don’t give out your information to online strangers because you don’t know who [is] on the other end.”
