Supporters of the recently impeached Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Mudashiru Obasa, assembled at the Speaker’s Lodge on Joel Ogunnaike Street, GRA Ikeja, Lagos, on Saturday morning.
According to The PUNCH, dressed in pro-Obasa caps and vests, the group gathered in significant numbers, reportedly organizing a “heroic welcome” for the former Speaker, who was impeached by a majority of lawmakers in the House.
Mojisola Meranda, the former Deputy Speaker, has since been installed as the new Speaker and has presided over two sittings in Obasa’s absence. Sources indicate that Obasa was out of the country when the impeachment took place.
Controversy surrounds the use of the Speaker’s Lodge, located at 47 Joel Ogunnaike Street, for the former Speaker’s potential arrival. Obasa is no longer officially entitled to the residence, raising questions about how it was made accessible. A nearby resident expressed surprise, saying, “I didn’t expect that the lodge would be opened for them.”
Security personnel, including police officers, are currently stationed at the area to maintain order.
However, as of the time of this report, Obasa has not yet been seen at the location.
