Scores of workers of the Obafemi Awolowo Teaching Hospital staged a protest on Thursday morning over unpaid salaries which they said has lasted for almost a year.
The workers dragged a protest after almost 14 months of working without pay, some staff of the Obafemi Awolowo University Teaching Hospital Complex have been sacked.
The workers holding placards with inscriptions on the hospital’s premises on Thursday: “Pay us our salary OAUTHC,” “Our demand is clear. Pay our 14 months salary,” “Our 14 month salary or nothing else,” “Say no to injustice,” and “We own this country together.”
The employees were on Wednesday asked to desist from coming to work.
According to Channels, the enraged workers lamented that they were laid off after working for months without pay.
The workers blocked all the entrance gates of the OAUTH around 7am and avoided entry and coming out of the hospital by anyone.
The management of the teaching hospital employed the workers in 2022. However, the Federal Government that the management and some workers were involved in job racketeering, leading to their sack.
Angered by the development, the affected workers besieged the hospital’s main gate on Thursday, chanting solidarity songs to express their grievances, asking the management to rescind its decision.
The main gate of the hospital was shut, and workers were not allowed entry. Also, services were disrupted by the protest.
The management of the hospital has yet to react to the development. Efforts to get the spokesperson to comment on it failed as she did not respond to several telephone calls put to her.
