The Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, Osun State, has been thrown into mourning following the sudden death of Professor Olanipekun Famakinwa from the Department of Philosophy.
According to a statement issued by the university’s Public Relations Officer, Abiodun Olanrewaju, Famakinwa fell ill during a departmental meeting on Wednesday, March 5, 2025.
His colleagues, noticing that he was breathing abnormally, quickly rushed him to the University Health and Medical Centre for immediate medical attention.
“After an initial medical assessment, the doctors on duty referred him to the Obafemi Awolowo University Teaching Hospital Complex, but upon arrival, he was confirmed dead,” Olanrewaju stated.
The Vice-Chancellor of OAU, Professor Simeon Bamire, alongside members of the university management, paid a condolence visit to the late professor’s family. During the visit, Bamire expressed deep sorrow over the loss, describing Famakinwa as an outstanding scholar.
“It is shocking and heartbreaking that such a brilliant academic could pass away so suddenly while carrying out his duties,” the Vice-Chancellor said.
He further encouraged the bereaved family to find comfort in the professor’s impactful life and contributions to the university community.
“We take solace in the fact that he lived a fulfilled life and made a lasting impact on his students, colleagues, and everyone who crossed his path,” he added.
