Former Head of State and founder of NYSC, Retired Gen. Yakubu Gowon said the National Youth Service Corps Trust Fund would enhance training in the Skill Acquisition and Entrepreneurship Development programme, among other benefits.
According to the News Agency of Nigeria, he said this when the Director-General of NYSC, Brig.-Gen. Yusha’u Ahmed led some management staff of the scheme to pay him a courtesy visit.
The Director, Press and Public Relations, Mr Eddy Megwa, made this known in a statement on Friday in Abuja.
According to Gowon, “the Trust Fund will make money accessible for youth corps entrepreneurs to build their enterprises and increase the standard of amenities at the orientation camps.”
He also stated that he is optimistic that the proposed National Youth Service Corps Trust Fund Bill will soon receive presidential assent.
Gowon congratulated the director-general on becoming the 22nd Chief Executive of the program and asked him to lead in an inclusive manner.
“Since the scheme’s inception, all of the managers have done incredibly well,” he claimed.
“Strive and work to leave positive legacies; you have a good team to work with.”
The former head of state advised Ahmed to make the most of his extensive expertise to advance NYSC.
Ahmed committed to continue the founding fathers of the plan’s legacy in his reply.
On January 30, the new NYSC administrator took over as the 22nd director-general of the program.
According to the News Agency of Nigeria, the measure, which was approved by both chambers of the National Assembly, requires companies doing business in Nigeria to contribute 1% of their net profits to the trust fund.
