A member of the National Youth Service Corps, Ushie Rita Uguamaye, popularly known as Raye, has issued a public apology following backlash over her comments about Lagos.
Raye sparked controversy after posting a video where she described the economic struggles in Nigeria and remarked on an unpleasant smell in Lagos. The video quickly went viral, drawing mixed reactions from Lagosians.
In a follow-up statement, she expressed regret over the way her comments were perceived.
“I want to first of all state that I am sorry to the people who were born and raised in Lagos if you feel offended by what I said,” she wrote. “My words were never meant to demean the state but to share my honest observations as a visitor.”
She also addressed the cost of living in the city, revealing that despite working over 45 hours a week, she finds it difficult to afford leisure activities like social outings.
“I want better for myself. And I hope you do too,” she stated, emphasizing the need for improved living conditions.
Her remarks have fueled discussions on economic realities in Lagos, with some supporting her perspective, while others defended the city’s vibrancy.
Raye ended her statement by encouraging Nigerians to push for positive change.
“If we stay committed to asking for better, we will get better,” she said.
