Borussia Dortmund have named Nuri Sahin as their new manager, signing a three-year deal to succeed Edin Terzic, who left the club after guiding them to the Champions League final, where they lost 2-0 to Real Madrid.
Terzic reportedly departed following a disagreement with defender Mats Hummels.
Sahin, a former Dortmund and Liverpool midfielder, expressed his gratitude for the opportunity, saying, “It is a great honor for me to be the coach of Borussia Dortmund. I would like to thank everyone in charge at the club for the trust they have placed in me.”
The 35-year-old, who made 274 appearances for Dortmund across two spells after coming through the club’s academy, retired from playing in 2021.
He launched his managerial career with Antalyaspor before joining Dortmund as an assistant to Terzic in December 2023.
Sahin’s appointment is seen as a testament to his tactical acumen and motivational skills, with reports suggesting he played a key role in Dortmund’s surprising journey to the Champions League final.
His former teammate Sven Bender is expected to join him as an assistant coach.
Terzic’s departure came amid reports of a rift with Hummels over tactics, with the defender criticizing the team’s approach in certain matches.
Hummels expressed his frustration, stating, “I was furious because I was of the opinion that Borussia Dortmund shouldn’t play like that – against any opponent in the world.”
The situation escalated to a point where Terzic offered to resign, and it is speculated that either he or Hummels will leave the club this summer.
Hummels’ contract is set to expire at the end of the month, and reports suggest he will not be offered a renewal.
