The Nigeria Railway Corporation has fired and demoted some staff who were found to be involved in ticket racketeering.
The Managing Director of the NRC, Mr Fidet Okhira, disclosed this on Wednesday during an interactive session organized by the House of Representatives Committee on Finance on the 2024-2026 Medium-Term Expenditure Framework and Fiscal Strategy Paper.
He explained that the NRC was collaborating with security organizations to address the threat.
The chairman of the House Committee, James Faleke, expressed worries about the corporation’s meager N345 million income remitted in 2023.
“Our concern is that if we expect so much revenue from NRC and we aren’t getting it, then there is a problem.
“I think we should take the decision that the railway should be self-funded to take care of its operations and remit to the government the surplus,” he said.
