The Nigeria Police Force has issued a formal letter to Amnesty International, requesting an immediate retraction and public apology for a report titled “Bloody August: Nigeria Government’s Violent Crackdown on End Bad Governance Protests.”
The letter, dated January 6, 2025, and signed by the Force Public Relations Officer, ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, described the report as misleading and damaging to the reputation of the police.
The controversial publication by Amnesty International alleged human rights violations, police brutality, and excessive use of force by the NPF during the August 2024 End Bad Governance protests.
However, the NPF has categorically denied these allegations, labeling them baseless and devoid of credible evidence.
“We have thoroughly reviewed the claims and can confidently assert that they are completely false,” Adejobi wrote. “The Nigeria Police Force acted with utmost restraint and professionalism, even in the face of provocation and violent attacks.”
The letter emphasized that during the protests, officers adhered to global best practices and used minimal force only when necessary. It also highlighted efforts by the police to protect peaceful protesters and arrest criminal elements who sought to exploit the demonstrations.
To substantiate its stance, the NPF pointed to national media coverage that it claims corroborates the Force’s commitment to maintaining law and order.
“The public can attest to our dedication to protecting lives and property while respecting citizens’ rights,” the statement added.
The NPF expressed concern over the impact of Amnesty International’s report, stating that it undermines the trust the Force has worked to build with Nigerians. “Such falsehoods demoralize our officers who risk their lives daily to protect the public,” Adejobi said.
In its letter, the NPF demanded that Amnesty International retract the publication and issue a public apology within seven days. The Force warned that failure to comply would compel it to pursue legal action to protect its integrity.
“We expect Amnesty International to uphold the principles of fairness and accountability by retracting this damaging report,” the letter stated.
Reaffirming its commitment to professionalism, the NPF assured Nigerians of its dedication to safeguarding lives and upholding the law. “We will continue to serve with diligence, professionalism, and respect for human rights,” the Force promised.
