The Chairman of the Northern States Governors’ Forum and Governor of Gombe State, Muhammadu Yahaya, has expressed deep concern over the recent flooding in Borno State, which has displaced thousands and caused widespread damage.
In a statement issued by Ismaila Misilli, Director-General of Press Affairs at the Gombe State Government House, Yahaya extended his sympathies to the government and people of Borno State, particularly the communities affected by the overflow of the Alau Dam, which has severely impacted Maiduguri and parts of Jere Local Government Area.
“This tragedy has displaced thousands of people and disrupted critical infrastructure,” the statement read. “On behalf of the 19 northern governors, I offer our heartfelt condolences to Governor Babagana Zulum and the people of Borno.”
The flooding, which submerged several residential areas and displaced large numbers of residents, has heightened concerns across northern Nigeria, as other states are also grappling with similar challenges.
Yahaya called for urgent action from the Federal Government and humanitarian organizations, emphasizing the need for intensified relief efforts.
“We are urging the Federal Government and relevant humanitarian organizations to increase their support in providing immediate relief to those affected. This is not just a crisis for Borno, but for the entire northern region,” Yahaya said.
The NSGF Chairman praised the prompt response of the Borno State Government and the coordinated efforts of emergency responders and volunteers on the ground.
“We commend the swift actions taken by the Borno State Government and the resilience of the people in facing this challenge,” Yahaya added.
He also appealed for increased intervention from the National Emergency Management Agency and other relevant bodies, especially to prioritize assistance for women, children, and vulnerable groups.
“We are praying for the safety and well-being of all those affected. With collective action and determination, we believe the people of Borno will rebuild and emerge stronger,” Yahaya stated.
