The Nigeria Police Force has reacted to the statement by the Nigeria Army urging citizens to join in the fight against insecurity, adding, ‘no gree for terrorists’, ‘no gree for perpetrators of insecurity’, while the police initially kicked against the use of the viral 2024 slogan, ‘no gree for anybody’.
The Force Public Relations Officer, ACP Muyiwa Adejobi, had during a press conference in Abuja on Wednesday, warned against the use of the slogan, citing violence against police officers.
However, Nigeria Army had seemed to opposed the warning hours after when the Director of Defence Media Operations, Edward Buba, while addressing journalists on Thursday in Abuja, joined in using the slang ‘no gree for terrorists‘ calling on Nigerians to do anything in their capacity to prevent terrorists from tormenting them in 2024.
Buba said, “We have demonstrated our commitments that our actions is to win the war. Troops we therefore act in tremendous force to achieve this task ahead as we progress in the year 2024.
“Having said that, I will say this, this year 2024, I will urged the citizens of this country to see security as a collective responsibilty of all, therefore, no gree for terrorists, ‘no gree’ for perpetrators of insecurity.”
While reacting to this, the police spokesperson, said, “Yes. No dey gree for terrorists, bandits, etc. It’s indeed reasonable, but how do we manage and handle the unreasonable No dey gree? Many don’t understand the slogan, and we need to view it from a wider perspective. Our advice still stands. Be reasonable when you want to apply or use the slogan.”
Meanwhile, the origin of the slogan cannot be traced, Nigerians particularly youths have adopted it as motivation to succeed in the new year, which is now going viral on social media.
The warning had also sparked criticism from social media users who further spread the slogan, saying no one can stop them.
Taking to official X handle on Thursday night, the FPRO also said, “Police are in the best position to advise and educate Nigerians on possible early warning signs of an impending danger as a civil and people-oriented institution”.
He further warned that the slogan should not be used to attack security operatives while discharging their duties.
“Do not take the 2024 slogan for granted. Do not abuse the slogan and capitalise on it to be attacking security operatives while discharging their duties.
“Be reasonable with the slogan, sue for, and embrace peace anywhere you find yourself, even at home. It is well with our dear country”, he said.
