President of the Nigerians in Diaspora Organization, New Jersey Chapter, U.S, Dr. Adeola Popoola, has said that no election is worth dying for, he also issued a warning to Nigerians about the March 11 election.
Popoola also warned against thuggery and hooliganism, which could escalate into violence, in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria on Friday in New York.
“Elections occur in cycles, and this one will come and go just like the ones before it. We can never be perfect, certainly not in a single instant.
“The 200 million “adult-enough” Nigerians living in Nigeria and abroad should keep this in mind, elections are basically a game of numbers after all the campaigning, perhaps not even a vindication of the smartest or best.
“Wishing your opponent’s death or the lifelong disfigurement of his or her supporters is barbarous. Every contestant should hope that they will have another chance in the upcoming round,” he said.
He also claimed that Nigerians living in the United States are constantly worried about the future of their country, particularly whether things will turn out well at home.
Popoola said that the law is the law and cannot be changed, and that it is the duty of all citizens to uphold the law.
“In light of this, the elections will be scrutinized for adherence to the law.
“We feel that whatever rules INEC has established have the support of the Legislative Houses, our legislators, and representatives of every Nigerian citizen.
He stated, “The Executives, hereby Presidency and State Governors, must permit and promote its activities, while the Judiciary and law enforcement institutions, must enforce it.
The official requested that relevant electoral rules and regulations be upheld by the INEC, judiciary, police, and other law enforcement organizations.
“The law should also itemize in plain words what is permissible and what is not tolerated at voting centres,” he concluded.
