The Nigerian Meteorological Agency is set to unveil its 2025 Seasonal Climate Prediction on Tuesday, February 4, 2025, focusing on the theme, “The Role of Early Warnings towards a Climate Resilient Aviation Industry for Sustainable Socio-Economic Development.”
In a statement released on Monday, NiMet highlighted the importance of its annual climate forecast, which provides detailed predictions on rainfall, temperature, and other climatic patterns essential for various sectors of the economy.
According to NiMet’s Director General, Prof. Charles Anosike, the SCP is a critical tool for guiding socio-economic activities across multiple industries.
“The Seasonal Climate Prediction provides vital weather and climate information that affects sectors such as agriculture, aviation, disaster risk management, health, oil and gas, telecommunications, tourism, transport, power, and water resources,” he said.
The 2025 SCP will include specific forecasts such as the onset and cessation dates of the rainy season, total rainfall predictions across Nigeria’s 774 local government areas, and temperature trends from January to May.
Additionally, the report will address potential health implications, including malaria and meningitis risks in vulnerable regions.
“The socioeconomic impacts of rainfall and temperature patterns are also analyzed in the document, offering insights to help mitigate potential risks,” Prof. Anosike added.
The SCP is expected to be launched by the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Mr. Festus Keyamo SAN. The event will feature the introduction of a policy summary document, translations of the SCP into three major Nigerian languages, and the release of the State of the Climate in Nigeria report.
NiMet emphasized that the SCP is a valuable resource for stakeholders in both public and private sectors, as well as for development partners, NGOs, the diplomatic community, and farmer associations.
