A planned strike by labour unions at the Nigerian Meteorological Agency has been suspended following an agreement reached on Sunday, May 19, 2024.
This was disclosed on their official X account on Sunday.
The strike, which was scheduled to begin on Monday, May 20, was called off after a special session convened by the House Committee on Aviation and Technology.
The strike was announced by aviation unions, including the National Union of Air Transport Employee Association of Nigeria, the Association of Nigerian Aviation Professionals, and the Amalgamated Union of Public Corporations and Technical and Recreational Employees, over the non-payment of 45 months of minimum wage arrears and consequential adjustments for staff members.
NiMet’s Director of Human Resources, Nasiru Sani, had earlier stated that the issue of unpaid consequential salary adjustments predates the current management, but assured that the agency is engaging with the unions and working to resolve the issue.
According to NiMet, the labour unions have suspended the planned strike action following an agreement reached during the special session.
He added, “However, as a responsible management that cares about the welfare of its staff, we are engaging with the unions and we regularly update them of our various engagements with government agencies to help pay off the arrears.”
With effect to NiMet’s meeting with the unions, the agency has said, “Labour Unions in the Nigerian Meteorological Agency have suspended the planned strike action scheduled to begin on Monday, May 20th, 2024.
The agency did not provide further details on the terms of the agreement, but it is expected that the suspension of the strike will allow for further negotiations and resolution of the outstanding issues.
