A 34-year-old Nigerian man, Quham Babatunde, tragically lost his life after being stabbed by a group of suspected thugs on South Anne Street in Dublin, Ireland, last Saturday.
According to a report by Daily Mail UK on Wednesday, Babatunde had attended an Afroswing concert at a nightclub in the Irish capital before the fatal attack.
Emergency responders arrived at the scene on South Anne Street in the early hours of Saturday and provided medical assistance before rushing him to St. James’ Hospital.
Despite efforts to save him, he succumbed to multiple stab wounds, including one to the heart.
Footage circulating on social media reportedly captured a masked individual wielding a large knife as a violent altercation unfolded on South Anne Street, near Grafton Street.
Authorities have since launched a murder investigation, leading to the arrest of two suspects who are currently being interrogated.
Reacting to the incident, Ireland’s Minister for Justice, Jim O’Callaghan, condemned the attack, calling it “disgusting and unacceptable.”
Babatunde had been residing at the International Protection Accommodation Service Centre in Ballyogan, South Dublin.
Reports from Italian media outlet Gript indicate that he had a history with law enforcement in Italy, where he was arrested in 2018 on rape allegations while playing for the Reggiana youth football team.
He was subsequently scheduled for deportation in 2019 due to immigration violations.
Meanwhile, The Irish Mirror noted that friends of Babatunde acknowledged his previous legal troubles but maintained their belief in his innocence regarding the rape allegations.
