The Nigeria women’s U-17 team, Flamingoes on Friday beat the United States of America 4-3 on penalties to book their first-ever appearance in the semis of the age-grade competition.
The Flamingos took the lead in the 27th minute of the game through a penalty by Edafe before Villarreal equalized for the USA in the 41st minute.
Nigeria eventually emerged winner during the penalty shootout after the game had ended in a 1-1 draw after 90minutes.
The Flamingoes defeated the USA by scoring four out of their penalties against the USA who missed two of their penalties.
The Nigerian ladies bounced back from an opening defeat against Germany to trash New Zealand and Chile as they finished runners-up in Group B.
Having failed to reach the semi-finals in six previous editions, the Flamingoes has achieved the impossible, ending the country’s 14-year wait for a last-four berth in the competition.
