Governor Mohammed Bago of Niger State has urged Christian pilgrims from the state to refrain from embarking on this year’s pilgrimage to Israel due to ongoing conflicts in the Middle East.
The region has been plagued by hostilities between Israel and various Arab nations, resulting in widespread casualties.
Speaking at the 2024 Christmas Carol organized by the Niger State Government in collaboration with the state chapter of the Christian Association of Nigeria, Governor Bago emphasized the risks posed by the lack of peace in the Holy Land.
Held at the Justice Legbo Kutigi International Conference Hall in Minna, the Christmas Carol is a key part of the state’s festive celebrations.
Represented by Deputy Speaker Afiniki Dauda, the governor appealed for understanding from the Christian faithful regarding the suspension of this year’s pilgrimage.
“I appeal to the Christian faithful in the state to exercise patience over this year’s pilgrimage to Israel over the lack of peace in the Holy Land. Allowing pilgrims to travel there would be equivalent to signing their death warrants,” Bago stated.
The governor underscored the dangers facing travelers to the region, insisting he could not, in good conscience, endorse a trip that might endanger the lives of citizens.
“I am not willing to give tickets that would lead to the death of our Christian brothers and sisters,” he added. “I urge them to be patient and wait until peace returns to the Middle East. The safety of our citizens is paramount, and we will not compromise on that.”
In response, CAN Chairman Rev. Bulus Yohanna appealed to the governor to consider alternative pilgrimage destinations such as Jordan, Turkey, Rome, or Greece, highlighting opportunities available at the federal level for Christian pilgrims.
He further urged Christians to support Governor Bago through prayer and to exhibit love and generosity during the Christmas season.
“I want to take this opportunity to appeal to Your Excellency to consider pilgrimage to Jordan/Israel, Turkey/Jordan, and Rome or Greece, as there is an opportunity at the federal level for intending pilgrims,” Yohanna remarked.
