Newly appointed Chairman of the National Sports Commission, Malam Shehu Dikko, has expressed a determined vision for the future of sports in Nigeria, emphasizing the importance of collective support from all stakeholders to achieve “ambitious goals” for the sector.
According to the News Agency of Nigeria, this announcement came following a closed-door meeting in Abuja with Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume, and the former Minister of Sports Development, John Owan Enoh.
After the meeting, which Dikko described as an early step in building a collaborative foundation, he shared that the discussions were aimed at establishing a solid framework for enhancing Nigeria’s sports industry to meet international standards.
“The meeting is part of early groundwork to establish a robust framework aimed at transforming Nigeria’s sports landscape into a sustainable sports economy,” Dikko remarked, underscoring the need for a structured approach to sports development across the nation.
Dikko reiterated the significance of bringing all stakeholders together to ensure the NSC’s objectives are met and to propel Nigerian sports onto a higher level.
“This new direction is expected to boost professionalism, create economic opportunities, and enhance sports infrastructure and development across the country,” he explained. “The united front of all stakeholders is essential in achieving the ambitious goals of the NSC and take Nigerian sports to unprecedented heights,” he added, urging for an industry-wide rally around the Commission’s initiatives.
NAN also reported that this development followed President Bola Tinubu’s decision to dissolve the Ministry of Sports Development, integrating its responsibilities into the NSC to create a more dynamic sports economy.
This change is intended to foster a sustainable model that could drive growth, investment, and modernization within Nigeria’s sports sector.
