San Antonio Spurs rising star, Victor Wembanyama, will miss the rest of the NBA season due to a shoulder injury, the team confirmed on Thursday.
The 21-year-old has been diagnosed with deep vein thrombosis, a type of blood clot, in his right shoulder, according to the Spurs’ official statement.
“The condition was discovered when Wembanyama returned to San Antonio following the All-Star Game in San Francisco. Wembanyama is expected to miss the remainder of the 2024-25 regular season,” the team announced.
The reigning Rookie of the Year had been putting together an outstanding sophomore campaign and earned his first All-Star selection.
He was averaging 24.3 points, 11 rebounds, and 3.7 assists per game this season.
Wembanyama delivered a career-best performance in November 2024, exploding for 50 points against the Washington Wizards.
That achievement made him the fourth-youngest player in NBA history to reach the milestone, trailing only Devin Booker, LeBron James, and record-holder Brandon Jennings, who accomplished it at 20 years and 52 days old.
The towering Frenchman was also a top contender for the Defensive Player of the Year award, boasting averages of 3.8 blocks and 1.1 steals per game.
However, with this unfortunate setback, he will be ineligible for the honour as he will not meet the league’s 65-game requirement.
