A naval officer identified as Leading Seaman A. Akila has been detained by the Defence Headquarters for allegedly shooting and killing his colleague in Zamfara State under unclear circumstances.
The incident reportedly took place at around 3:12 a.m. on October 25, 2024, at the Forward Operating Base Dansadua, where Akila was stationed as part of Operation Fansan Yamma.
According to The PUNCH, the Director of Defence Media Operations Major General Buba Edward “Akila opened fire several times on his colleague, leading to the fatal incident. He was immediately disarmed, taken into custody, and an investigation was launched to uncover the motive and details surrounding the case.”
Following the investigation, Akila is expected to face a court-martial, as authorities pursue disciplinary actions for breaches of military conduct.
“Once the investigation is complete, the matter will proceed to a standing court-martial to address such cases of misconduct within the ranks,” Buba added.
In line with military protocol, the Defence Headquarters has begun the administrative process of notifying the family of the deceased soldier, though the victim’s identity has not yet been released publicly.
“We are currently in the process of notifying the family. The name of the deceased will be made available in due course,” Buba confirmed.
