A police inspector with the State Intelligence Bureau of the Nasarawa State Police Command has been indicted for raping and impregnating his 15-year-old niece.
The state Chairman of the International Federation of Women Lawyers, Rabiatu Addra, made this known in a press briefing in Lafia on Wednesday.
The Chairman revealed that the inspector, who is the victim’s uncle, raped her on several occasions, according to the report they got from a whistleblower.
Addra said the cop has been apprehended and he would be prosecuted.
She said, “On receipt of the information by the whistleblower, FIDA, in conjunction with the Sexual and Gender-Based Violence Response Team, facilitated and mobilised police officers to get the suspect arrested.
“Our team, with the police, took the victim to a hospital and paid for her treatment but unfortunately she lost the six-month-old baby.
“The state Ministry of Justice further paid the bill for a DNA test as part of the ongoing investigation to ascertain the real culprit.”
Rabiatu said the victim had been discharged from the hospital and reunited with her family.
“We are appealing to victims of abuse to always have the confidence to speak out so that we can render the necessary support to them,” she added.
Efforts to reach the Command’s Public Relations Officer, Ramhan Nansel, proved abortive, as he did not respond to phone calls and text messages sent to his mobile lines.
