Six suspected gay men have been arrested by the Nasarawa State Police Command for using a gay dating internet platform to defraud unsuspecting users.
The state Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Ramhan Nansel, in a statement in Lafia on Sunday, said the suspects’ mode of operation was to arrange dates for their victims through a match-making process and forcefully take away their belongings.
He said, “On July 31, 2022, around 07.20am, while acting based on credible information, police operatives attached to the Masaka Division, Karu Local Government Area, in a sting operation, raided the hideout of some notorious criminals and arrested the following suspects: Sunday Michael, Luka Musa, Joy Sunday, Elijah Ishaya, Agada Sandra and Abdulrahman Tijani.
“Preliminary investigation revealed that the suspects criminally conspired among themselves and utilised a popular gay dating app where they arrange dates with unsuspecting members of the public from different parts of the country, lure them to their hideout, hold them hostage and dispossess them of their belongings.
“Consequently, the sum of N150,000 which they collected from one of their victims who came in from Imo State on July 30, 2022, was recovered from the suspects as an exhibit.
“The suspects confessed to have so far lured eight victims via the same mode of operation and made N1,360,000 as proceeds of crime from their victims at different times.”
Nansel said the state Commissioner of Police, Adesina Soyemi, urged members of the public to be mindful of the kind of friends they make on social media.
