The National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons has rescued nine pregnant women from a baby factory located in the Ushafa area of Abuja.
This was revealed in a statement issued on Thursday by NAPTIP’s Press Officer, Mr. Vincent Adekoye, and shared with journalists in the Federal Capital Territory.
According to Adekoye, the discovery was made after a concerned citizen alerted the agency about suspicious activities within a residential estate in Ushafa.
Upon investigation, operatives found the victims locked inside an apartment by an unidentified trafficking agent.
“The victims were confined to an apartment in the estate by a yet-to-be-identified trafficking agent after being recruited through an online platform,” Adekoye disclosed.
He noted that the raid underscores the agency’s commitment to combating human trafficking and protecting vulnerable individuals.
Meanwhile, NAPTIP’s Director-General, Binta Adamu-Bello, has commended the judiciary for sentencing Bishop Kenneth Duke, a convicted trafficker, in a landmark judgment.
Speaking on the judgment, Adamu-Bello emphasized that the agency will not tolerate any violation of its laws, especially concerning human trafficking and violence against persons.
“NAPTIP remains resolute in ensuring justice for victims of trafficking and violence. As I stated recently, we will not spare anyone who breaks these laws, regardless of their status,” she said.
Adamu-Bello also expressed her dismay at the prevalence of sexual violence, particularly cases involving minors, while urging society to unite against such crimes.
“Rape is a grave offense that leaves lasting trauma on victims. How can a 52-year-old man violate a 12-year-old girl? It is both heartbreaking and criminal. I am relieved that justice has been served in this case,” she stated.
