In response to the World Bank’s decision to halt loans to Uganda due to the country’s anti-LGBTQ law, the president of Uganda, Yoweri Museveni, denounced the move on Thursday.
Museveni stated that Uganda would resist efforts to renounce its traditions and values.
He said, “It is, therefore, unfortunate that the World Bank and other actors dare to want to coerce us into abandoning our faith, culture, principles and sovereignty, using money,” Reuters reports.
“They really underestimate all Africans,” he added.
The World Bank announced on Tuesday that it will halt funding to Uganda due to the nation’s ban on LGBTQ practises.
According to The PUNCH, Uganda’s anti-LGBTQ law carries a death penalty and a life sentence as consequences for conviction.
However, Museveni asserted that Uganda could borrow money from other sources if necessary, and that the start of oil production, which is anticipated for 2025, would bring in more funds.
