Paris Saint-Germain will have to hold off on their Ligue 1 title celebrations after Monaco staged a comeback to defeat Nice 2-1 in the Derby de la Côte d’Azur.
With Marseille falling to Reims and PSG cruising past Saint-Étienne, a draw in Saturday’s late fixture between Monaco and Nice would have mathematically secured the title for Luis Enrique’s side.
However, Breel Embolo’s decisive 73rd-minute strike at the Stade Louis-II ensured that PSG’s coronation remains on hold for now.
Nice took the lead before halftime when Jérémie Boga expertly guided a header into the bottom-left corner.
Monaco had a chance to level earlier, but Mika Biereth squandered an opportunity from the penalty spot. The young forward redeemed himself 10 minutes into the second half, unleashing a stunning equalizer.
Embolo then sealed the comeback with his 73rd-minute goal, and Nice’s woes deepened when experienced defender Dante received a late red card for a professional foul.
This victory pushes Monaco into second place, 21 points behind PSG, with seven matches left in the season.
The result highlights Monaco’s resilience, as they have now collected 16 points from losing positions in the 2024-25 campaign—more than any other Ligue 1 side.
Conversely, Nice have dropped 19 points from winning positions, the highest in the league.
Monaco also extended their impressive home form with a fifth consecutive league victory at Stade Louis-II, matching their streak from March to May 2022.
Historically, Monaco have now defeated Nice 58 times in 130 encounters across all competitions, equaling their highest tally of wins against a single opponent, Rennes.
