Chelsea head coach, Enzo Maresca, has officially named midfielder Moisés Caicedo as the club’s new captain.
The announcement was shared by renowned transfer expert Fabrizio Romano on his X account on Sunday.
Caicedo expressed his gratitude for the honour, commending Maresca for entrusting him with the leadership role at the club.
“I’m grateful to Maresca for making me Chelsea’s captain,” Caicedo said in the statement. “I want to become a legend here, and that’s what I’m working hard to achieve every day. It means a lot to captain Chelsea. It’s a dream come true because I grew up supporting Chelsea.”
The Ecuadorian midfielder has become a pivotal figure in Chelsea’s setup after joining from Brighton & Hove Albion.
Caicedo made headlines in 2023 when he opted for an eight-year contract with the Blues, completing a £100 million transfer with an additional £15 million in potential add-ons.
The deal also saw him turn down a record-breaking £111 million offer from Liverpool.
Caicedo’s first match as captain will see him lead Chelsea into a key Premier League clash against Nottingham Forest in the ongoing 2024/2025 season.
