The family of the late singer, Ilerioluwa Aloba, better known as Mohbad, recently conducted a new autopsy to uncover the cause of his death.
According to The PUNCH, on June 26, the Magistrate of the Coroner Court in Ikorodu, Lagos State, T.A. Shotobi, authorized Mr. Joseph Aloba, the deceased’s father, to hire a licensed pathologist for an independent autopsy on Mohbad.
The court also stipulated that Mr. Aloba would be responsible for all costs associated with the autopsy and related examinations.
Smember of the family’s legal team, Monisola Odumosu, announced on Tuesday that the autopsy was performed on Friday, July 19, and Saturday, July 20.
Odumosu stated that if the post-mortem did not reveal the cause of death, the family planned to conduct toxicology and histology tests on the collected samples.
“The second autopsy, requested by the Aloba family and ordered by Magistrate T.A. Shotobi, took place on Friday, July 19, and Saturday, July 20, 2024. This autopsy is a two-part process, with the first part now complete. If the initial examination does not determine the cause of death, the second part will involve toxicology and histology tests on the necessary samples,” the statement read.
The legal team also mentioned that the autopsy was observed by Mohbad’s father and two separate pathologists appointed by him and Mohbad’s wife, Wunmi.
“This comprehensive procedure was conducted last Friday and was witnessed by Mr. Joseph Aloba, the forensic pathologist appointed by him, legal representatives of both Mr. Aloba, and a pathologist appointed by Wunmi Aloba to observe the procedure,” the statement added.
Mohbad passed away at 27 on September 12, 2023, under circumstances that fueled social media controversies.
A former signee of Marlian Music, owned by Naira Marley, Mohbad left the label in February 2022. The Lagos State Police Command set up a 13-man special investigation team on September 18, 2023, to investigate his death.
His death led to the arrest of Naira Marley and Lagos socialite Balogun Eletu, known as Sam Larry, among others.
Mohbad’s body was exhumed on September 21, 2023, for an autopsy to determine the cause of death.
However, a pathologist testified on May 15 before the Coroner’s Court that the initial autopsy could not determine the cause of death due to the body’s decomposition.
PUNCH subsequently reported that a US-based lab denied claims by the Lagos State Government that a toxicology test had been conducted at its facility.
In response to inquiries from a correspondent, Client Services Associate, Forensics Division, NMS Labs, Esther Dede, stated, “Unfortunately, we do not have a case for that patient.”
