At least 45 bags containing human remains were discovered in a ravine in the western Mexican state of Jalisco.
According to local authorities, they were discovered during the hunt for seven missing persons who were reported missing last week.
“Forty-five bags with human remains have been extracted that belong to both male and female people,” the state prosecutor’s office said in a statement.
The grisly discovery was made on Tuesday at the bottom of a 40-meter (120-foot) ravine in Zapopan, a neighbourhood of Guadalajara, a major industrial hub.
Authorities had initiated a search for two women and five males, all in their thirties, who had gone missing since May 20.
The missing persons reports were filed independently on separate days, but investigators discovered that they all worked at the same phone centre.
The phone centre was in the same neighbourhood as the human remains.
The number of victims and their identities have still to be determined by forensic experts.
