Manchester United has disclosed that the club will be releasing Mason Greenwood.
This was disclosed by the club through its official website on Monday afternoon.
The choice was made in response to strong fan outrage following revelations last week that top United officials, including CEO Richard Arnold, had instructed employees to get ready for Greenwood’s return.
There were rumours that the 21-year-old forward might rejoin Erik ten Hag’s first-team group, but the club has decided to abandon such ideas and sever ties.
“Based on the evidence available to us, we have concluded that the material posted online did not provide a full picture and that Mason did not commit the offences in respect of which he was originally charged. That said, as Mason publicly acknowledges today, he has made mistakes which he is taking responsibility for.
“All those involved, including Mason, recognise the difficulties with him recommencing his career at Manchester United. It has therefore been mutually agreed that it would be most appropriate for him to do so away from Old Trafford, and we will now work with Mason to achieve that outcome”, the club stated.
Greenwood had been suspended by United since January 2022, but in February of this year, the Crown Prosecution Service dropped charges of attempted rape, using coercive or controlling behaviour, and assault causing actual bodily harm, which put his football career back in the spotlight.
After that, the club initiated an internal probe on Greenwood’s future, with the player practising alone and United getting data from his sessions.
The 21-year-old, who has previously represented England, has two years remaining on his contract, with a 12-month club option.
