The Marvel Cinematic Universe is reuniting Earth’s Mightiest Heroes for the highly anticipated Avengers: Doomsday., six years after Avengers: Endgame,
Featuring a mix of MCU veterans, stars from 20th Century Fox’s former X-Men franchise, and the new Fantastic Four lineup, the film is shaping up to be a multiversal epic.
Directed by Anthony and Joe Russo, the project was first announced at San Diego Comic-Con in July 2022.
However, it has since undergone major revisions. Initially centered around an alternate-timeline version of Kang the Conqueror, portrayed by Jonathan Majors, the story had to be reworked following Majors’ conviction for assault and harassment in December 2023.
During the 2024 San Diego Comic-Con, Marvel made a shocking reveal: Robert Downey Jr. is set to return to the MCU, but not as Iron Man. Instead, he will take on the role of the iconic villain Doctor Doom.
While Marvel has yet to disclose the film’s official plot, the storyline may take inspiration from Ultimate Comics: Doomsday (2011).
In this comic, the Fantastic Four join forces with various Marvel heroes to stop a looming multiversal threat—one who turns out to be a familiar face gone rogue.
The film’s ensemble cast appears to hint at this narrative, bringing together an impressive roster of heroes and villains across different Marvel franchises.
