Manchester United has dismissed Erik ten Hag from his role as manager following two and a half years at the helm.
The decision was communicated to the Dutchman by the club’s board on Monday morning, less than a day after United’s 2-1 loss to West Ham at London Stadium.
Ruud van Nistelrooy, who came on board as Ten Hag’s assistant last summer, has been appointed interim manager.
A statement confirming the sack by the club reads in part, “Erik ten Hag has left his role as Manchester United men’s first-team manager.
“Erik was appointed in April 2022 and led the club to two domestic trophies, winning the Carabao Cup in 2023 and the FA Cup in 2024.
“We are grateful to Erik for everything he has done during his time with us and wish him well for the future.
“Ruud van Nistelrooy will take charge of the team as interim head coach, supported by the current coaching team, whilst a permanent head coach is recruited.”
The recent defeat leaves United in a challenging position, sitting 14th in the Premier League standings with only three wins in their first nine games of the season.
The team is also struggling in Europe, currently ranked 21st among 36 clubs in the Europa League competition.
