Atalanta pulled off a remarkable comeback to secure a thrilling 3-2 victory over Fiorentina, with Ademola Lookman’s brilliance guiding his team to a memorable win.
The match began with Fiorentina pressing early, as Rolando Mandragora forced Atalanta’s goalkeeper Marco Carnesecchi into action with a powerful shot in the opening minutes.
This early warning was followed by Fiorentina’s breakthrough, when Carnesecchi managed to parry a powerful header from Robin Gosens after a corner. However, Lucas Martinez Quarta pounced on the loose ball, slotting home the rebound from close range to give the visitors a 1-0 lead.
Atalanta responded with a moment of magic from Ademola Lookman in his first Serie A appearance of the season. Picking up the ball on the left wing, he expertly skipped past Fiorentina’s Edoardo Bove and delivered a pinpoint cross for Mateo Retegui, who rose high to nod the ball past the helpless David De Gea, leveling the score at 1-1.
Fiorentina regained the lead before halftime with a well-worked team move. Mandragora whipped in a dangerous cross from the left flank, and Atalanta’s defense was caught napping.
Both Gosens and Moise Kean were left unmarked, and Kean had the easiest of tasks, heading the ball into the net from close range.
In celebration, he cheekily borrowed a cap from a fan in the stands, much to the delight of the Fiorentina supporters.
Fiorentina came close to extending their lead shortly after, with Kean shaking off a challenge from Isak Hien, only to see his powerful shot crash off the near post.
Cristiano Biraghi then produced a vital interception to prevent Retegui from tapping in another dangerous cross from Charles De Ketelaere just yards from goal.
Atalanta, however, were not done. From a set-piece, De Ketelaere showed his aerial prowess by out-jumping the Fiorentina defense to head in Ederson’s delivery, bringing the score to 2-2.
Incredibly, just 60 seconds later, Lookman struck again. Cutting in from the left wing, he weaved his way through a crowded Fiorentina penalty area and unleashed a low shot that threaded its way through a maze of legs, nestling into the bottom corner to complete Atalanta’s stunning turnaround.
After the restart, Atalanta nearly extended their lead further. Raoul Bellanova’s deflected shot rolled agonizingly past the post, and Lookman, continuing his dazzling form, came close with another effort after a slick series of one-twos with Retegui.
Atalanta kept pressing, with both Lookman and Retegui stretching to reach a dangerous ball flashed across the face of goal by De Ketelaere.
The Belgian playmaker was a constant threat, and his angled drive forced a sharp save from De Gea, who was also called into action to stop efforts from Davide Zappacosta and Lookman.
However, despite the pressure, Atalanta failed to capitalize on their chances, with Lookman blazing over the bar after being set free by De Ketelaere.
Despite the missed opportunities, Atalanta held firm and secured a hard-fought 3-2 win, leaving Fiorentina to rue their missed chances.
Lookman’s creativity and determination were the driving force behind Atalanta’s thrilling comeback, as they twice battled back from behind to claim all three points.
