Chairman of Ojokoro Local Council Development Area, Hammed Tijani, has expressed gratitude to the National Emergency Management Agency for the distribution of relief materials to vulnerable households and victims of the June 5 flood in the council.
The Chairman disclosed this at the commencement of the distribution of relief materials at the council secretariat.
The relief materials were distributed to 350 households/families affected by the flood.
The materials distributed included rice, beans, ceiling board, roofing sheet, zinc nail, 3-inch nail, mattresses, nylon mats, blankets, wax print and bags of cement, among others, to beneficiaries to mitigate the effect of the disaster.
Tijani lauded the prompt response by Lagos State Emergency Agency and NEMA in making on-the-spot assessment of areas affected by the flood.
The areas which benefited from the materials were Oniyaomebi/Owolabi/Hanson streets, Alagbado; Famuyiwa/Manacula Estate, Alakuko; Agric Road/Abimbola Awoniyi Estate by Abattoir Canal; New Jerusalem/Gbeleyi/Amje Road, Alakuko; Adeola Almoruf/Opeewe Street, Jankara-Ijaiye and Agas Street, Alakuko, among others.
The LG boss identified the measures put in place by the council’s Environmental Services Department, such as desilting and carting away of refuse from drainages, to allow for easy flow of water; regular jingles on radio stations to sensitise residents on how to properly dispose waste and also keep their environment clean.
He added that there were various community engagement and advocacy aimed at ensuring a cleaner environment.
NEMA Director of General Service Mrs. Adenike OgunKunle appreciated the chairman for steps taken to prevent flooding in the Ojokoro community.
She said NEMA would continue to provide relief materials and assistance to affected communities, and facilitate disaster risk reduction and preparedness.
Ojokoro Council Manager Bola Adeyemi assured the communities affected by flood that some roads have been submitted to the Lagos State Ministry of Works and that necessary modalities would be put in place soon.
“While we wait for necessary modalities to take place, we should desist from dumping refuse in drainage channels and from building shanties along water and drainage channels so as to prevent the reoccurrence of flooding, loss of lives and properties,” he said.
