The controversial ‘Jesus Is Not God’ banner displayed at the entrance of the Lekki Central Mosque in Lagos State, has been removed after backlash.
The banner, which quickly gained attention after it went viral on Wednesday, featured the statement: “Jesus Christ is not God. He is a Prophet and Messenger of God!”
By Wednesday night, a member of the Lekki Muslim community, Tunde Alabi, confirmed in a video that the banner had been taken down.
Alabi, who identified himself as a member of the mosque community, shared that after sending a message to the mosque committee, he was informed of the removal and decided to check in person.
“I’m a member of Lekki Muslim community. I noticed there was a banner in front of our mosque which was causing some controversy. I sent a message to the mosque committee and I was told it has been removed, so I came here personally to check and I can confirm that it has actually been removed,” he said.
He also offered an apology for any discomfort the banner might have caused.
The banner’s message prompted mixed reactions online. Some social media users criticized it as offensive and disrespectful, while others defended it, pointing out that similar statements have been made by pastors in the past.
Nigerian actress Wumi Tuase shared her unease on X, saying, “I don’t like to get into religious conversations but I found it very weird that Lekki Central Mosque has this in front of their gate.”
One Twitter user, @Dannymasterp, commented, “Jesus is not God of course the evidence is very clear, Is just that the church specializes in celebrating his personality more than his teachings, They call him God because he does miracles without knowing that was a way of making people believe he was sent by God.”
Another user, @shinoremy, pointed out, “The issue with the banner isn’t whether it is true or not. However, it is aimed at countering a religious doctrine, and coming from a religion like Islam could possibly incite religious conflicts. We need to do better as a people and just respect ourselves.”
In defense of the banner, influencer @GuyMr0 remarked, “That’s the hard truth. Jesus Christ is not God. He’s a Messenger of God. If Jesus Christ is God, then who was God before Jesus Christ was born?”
