Lagos State University has rescinded its decision to introduce new fees following student protests.
The university announced the withdrawal in a statement on its official platform, acknowledging the students’ concerns.
“Greatest Lasuites, the Vice Chancellor, Lagos State University, Prof. Ibiyemi Olatunji-Bello, following a meeting with students of the university, on Monday, July 8, 2024 has directed that the decision by the institution on the recently introduced CBT, Counselling, and Forensic charges, be withdrawn with immediate effect,” the post read.
The management of LASU yielded to student pressure after protests erupted against the newly introduced fees, which included a N10,000 charge for CBT.
LASU Life reported that students also demanded the removal of police officers from the campus premises.
In response, university management took three hours to deliberate on these demands. Vice-Chancellor Olatunji-Bello then addressed students directly in front of the senate building.
“The bill from LASU CBT was very high. 85 million naira was spent last semester and another 80 plus million was budgeted for this semester. The CBT is a private facility,” she explained during her address.
“Let me assure you that there would be a review of that,” she assured the students, urging them to return to their classrooms after addressing student leaders.
Shortly thereafter, LASU made the decision to withdraw the newly imposed fees, bowing to the pressure exerted by the protesting students.
