The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority detained a man identified as Adewunmi Taiwo for impersonating a LASTMA official on Oshodi Bridge.
Taiwo, who reportedly hails from Ilesha in Osun State and is married with three children, had allegedly been posing as a LASTMA officer to intimidate and extort both commercial and private motorists.
The suspect reportedly confessed to collecting between N15,000 and N25,000 daily through these unauthorized actions.
The arrest was confirmed in a statement from LASTMA’s Director of Public Affairs, Adebayo Taofiq, on Friday, October 25, which detailed Taiwo’s alleged activities.
According to LASTMA, Taiwo had been using a white Hiace Coaster Bus, bearing the registration number KJA 724 YJ, as part of his scheme to harass motorists.
A search of the vehicle revealed a LASTMA uniform, including a branded raincoat, which he reportedly used to deceive motorists on busy routes, particularly along Ikorodu Road and the Oshodi to Mile 2 expressway.
“We received multiple complaints about this particular Hiace bus involved in extorting drivers,” said LASTMA General Manager Olalekan Bakare-Oki. “Our Surveillance and Monitoring Unit was then tasked with investigating the reports, leading to the arrest of Mr. Taiwo.”
He further emphasized LASTMA’s commitment to safeguarding its reputation: “We are resolute in preserving LASTMA’s integrity. Let this serve as a clear warning to anyone who might misuse LASTMA’s image to exploit motorists,” he said, adding that the agency would pursue full legal action against the accused.
LASTMA reassured Lagos motorists of its dedication to maintaining effective traffic management, urging the public to report any suspicious activity via its toll-free hotline (080000527862) as part of ongoing efforts to curb illegal activities that tarnish the agency’s image.
