The Lagos State Emergency Management Agency has said it successfully managed 6,887 incidents over the past five years under the administration of Governor Babajide Olushola Sanwo-Olu, from 2019 to date.
The LASEMA Permanent Secretary, Dr Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu, disclosed this in a statement.
He explained that within the review period from January 1, 2023, to March 31, 2024, the agency efficiently handled 1,461 incidents in 2023 and an additional 445 incidents in the first quarter of 2024 totaling 1,906 incidents.
Giving the breaking down of the data, the agency noted that road accidents were the second most common incident category, with 507 cases, including 471 vehicle accidents, 19 fallen containers, and 17 other related incidents.
LASEMA reported that truck/tanker-related incidents led with 798 cases, including 519 truck accidents and 47 fallen truck/tanker cases. Fire disasters ranked third with 213 cases, including 192 fire outbreaks and 15 vehicular fires. Building collapses accounted for 43 cases, including 19 complete and 17 partial collapses.
Explosions numbered 9, with 8 gas and 1 pipeline explosions. Spillage/leakage incidents totaled 10, including 6 gas tanker leakages. The medical category had 200 cases, including 2 suicides, 2 attempted suicides, and 193 medical emergencies. Marine incidents included 6 flooding and capsized boats, while air crashes and train accidents recorded 1 and 2 cases, respectively.
Other Events saw 117 incidents, including 105 miscellaneous events. Alimosho LGA topped the list with 319 incidents, followed by Ikeja with 233, and Kosofe with 180. Notably, Badagry reported no emergency occurrences.
“In accordance with the statutory responsibilities of the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), to Respond, Rescue, Recover, and ensure continuous Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR) in Lagos State, the Agency successfully attended to 6,887 incidents in the last five years of the Governor Babajide Olushola Sanwo-Olu led administration from 2019 to date.
“During the period under review (1st January, 2023 and 31st March, 2024), the Agency successfully attended to 1,461 incidents last year between 1st January 2023, and 31st December, while 445 incidents were successfully attended in the first quarter of this year, between 1st January, 2024 and 31st March, 2024, making a total of 1,906 incidents attended by the Agency during the period.
“In the period under review, the Road Accident category ranked second with 507 cases, which comprises of 471 Vehicle Accidents, 19 Fallen Containers, and 17 others.
“The Truck/Tanker category ranks first with 798 cases comprising of 519 Truck Accidents, 19 Fallen Containers, 221 Broken-down Trucks, 11 Others, and 47 Fallen Truck Truck/Tankers.
“The Fire Disaster category ranked third with 213 recorded cases comprising of 192 Fire Outbreaks, 6 Tanker/Truck fire and 15 vehicular fires (Cars/BRT Buses).
“The Building Collapse category recorded 43 cases, comprising of 19 Collapsed Buildings, 2 Impending Collapses, 17 Partial Collapses and 5 Others.
“The Explosion category recorded 9 cases comprising of 1 Pipeline, and 8 Gas Explosions, while the Spillage/Leakage category recorded 10 cases comprising of 6 Gas Tanker leakages, 1 Diesel Tanker leakage and 3 Pipeline/Oil leakages.
“The Medical Category recorded 200 cases comprising of 2 Suicides, 2 Attempted Suicides, 2 Dead Bodies, 1 Missing Child and 193 Others.
“The Marine category recorded 6 cases comprising of 1 Flooding, and 5 Capsized Boats cases.
“Air Crash recorded 1 case, while the Train Accident category recorded 2 cases.
“Other Events category recorded a total of 117 incidents comprising of 105 Events, 2 Powerline cases, 2 bridge repairs, 1 Borehole Accident, 2 Demolitions and 1 Assault.
“Data Analysis reveals LASEMA achievement in each Local Government during the months under review. The densely populated Alimosho LGA, with the largest landmass, ranked first with 319 incidents out of the 1,906 cases successfully attended to by the Agency by 31st March, 2024.
“Ikeja LG ranked second with 233 incidents, followed by Kosofe LGA which recorded 180 cases, then Oshodi-Isolo with 153 cases, while Surulere LG folloed closely with 149 cases and Mushin with 129 cases attended by the Agency by end of March, 2024.
“Eti-Osa LG recorded 104 incidents, followed by Apapa LG with 101 incidents, Lagos Island LG with 85 incidents, Ikorodu LG with 84 incidents, Shomolu LG with 65 incidents, Ibeju-Lekki LG with 63 incidents and Lagos Mainland LGs with 49 incidents.
“Data further reveals that LASEMA successfully attended 43 incidents in Agege and Epe LGs, 30 incidents in Amuwo-Odofin LG, 24 incidents in Ifako-Ijaiye, 22 incidents in Ajeromi Ifelodun, 17 in Ojo LG, 13 outside Lagos, while Badagry Local Government did not suffer any emergency occurrence during the duration under review” the statement read.
